Newcastle United v Manchester City: Head to Head

The Stats Ahead of Saturday’s Oil Derby

It’s the third oil derby of the season and Manchester City travel to St James’s Park to face Newcastle United. The blues have an excellent recent record in the North East, however, the two played out an entertaining game in August 2022, when City came back from 3-1 to take a point.

Newcastle also put the blues out of the League Cup in September, and City will be looking for a modicum of revenge, as well as a vital three points, when the teams clash on Saturday evening.

It’s fair to say that, up until 2005, City’s record on Tyneside has been poor, and that’s putting it mildly. Since a 1-0 defeat at St James’s Park in September 2005, the blues have lost just twice in 18 matches. A 2-1 loss in 2019 and September’s League Cup defeat are the only times the blues have come away from Newcastle with nothing.

They have won 12 of those matches and drawn four and was the perfect way to end a previous five-match losing streak. But, it wasn’t always like that.

The teams first met on Tyneside as far back as 1894, when both teams were in the second division. Newcastle won that match and 11 of the following 15, drawing four in the process. The blues had to wait until 1913 for their first win away to the Toon, then won the next match in 1914. However, City then lost nine of the next 11 matches, drawing two of them to start another poor run.

City have won just 23 of the 97 matches held on Tyneside, with the Toon running out winners on 57 occasions. 20 draws, 7 of which have ended goalless, the last one coming in 1995.

The blues have scored 110 times at Newcastle, keeping 24 clean sheets, the last one coming in December 2021, when City won 4-0. Newcastle have hit 169 goals in this fixture and have prevented the blues from scoring on 34 times, the last one in September, City once went five matches at Newcastle without scoring between November 1968 and March 1972.

City’s heaviest defeat is currently 5-0, which occurred in 1983, but it was also the third time City had conceded five in one match. The blues biggest win is 4-0 in December 2021. It was the third time they’d hit four in one match.

The two teams have met 12 times in January with City winning four to Newcastle five, however, they have never met on the 13th of the month.
