It doesn’t matter the platform you visit. If the topic is Manchester City and transfers, get ready for the backlash. “They are destroying football”, “The game is finished”, “They are gaming the system”, “This is financial doping”, “They bribed their way out of UEFA punishment.” Blah, blah, blah.
It must be such a mixed bag supporting Manchester City. On the one hand you are happy your club is enjoying some of its best years in the game. Then on the other you have to contend with the fact the majority of other football fans hate your club with a passion.
No matter how much they try, they can’t hide it. In fact, for some it’s a badge of honour. They get a kick out of putting down Man City. It doesn’t matter what the club does, it’s wrong. Plain wrong.
I mean who spends £100m on a single player, except for a rogue club?
Never mind that the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus and even Paris Saint-Germain have been doing it. It’s just not done.
Who spends over £200m in a single transfer window other than a club bent on ruining the game?
Again, forget for a moment that the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United, even Atletico Madrid have been doing it. Oh, and Chelsea too. The London side splashed that amount last summer.
Of course, that doesn’t mean anything. It’s only when City do so that football comes tumbling down.
I mean, can you imagine Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling, Jack Grealish and Harry Kane playing for the same team? That’s killing competition. In fact, just hand them the league title. There’s no point even playing, even though David Silva and Sergio Aguero played for this same team recently.
Forget that Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino play for the same team. Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani and Jadon Sancho in the same side? Come on! Jadon who?
But what about N’golo Kante, Jorginho, Christian Pulisic, Timo Warner, Kai Havertz, and five world-class full-backs playing for the same team? Hey, that doesn’t mean anything.
I know they reached the FA Cup final and won the Champions League, but that does not compare to what City did. They simply ran over everybody and bought the league (like they always do).
This is fast becoming the life of a City fan; putting up with ridicule and learning that your success on the pitch is not deserved. They want you to feel like a cheat. Why? Simple; you don’t belong here.
A few even have the nerve to show up in the Bitterandblue comment section to spew out their ridiculousness. Unbelievable.
If it was up to them, the team would be in mid-table or battling relegation as was once the case. Actually, that’s too good for you. The Cityzens should be singing “Blue moon…” somewhere in the Championship or in the lower leagues. Then football will thrive and everyone will be happy.
In the summer of 2019, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid spent £224m, £230m and £276m respectively. In one transfer window. Yet, no one was talking about destroying the game like the Spanish La Liga president is doing now.
Talk about hypocrisy.
Well, to all who keep getting sleepless nights because Manchester City have become the dominant force that we are, wake up to the new reality.
We owe no one any apologies for our success. And we will continue to enjoy every bit of it. If we end up buying both Kane and Grealish for over £200m, we won’t be the first club to spend so much.
Neither will we be the last.
