Manchester City Women will face off against Real Madrid in round 2 of the Champions League as they look to reach the group stage of the competition.
The revamped Women’s Champions League will now see the usual 16 team knock-out stage replaced by a 16-team group stage and City, who finished runners up in the WSL last season, will need to navigate past the Spanish side to feature in the new style competition.
The draw took place on Sunday afternoon and our blue girls will be eager to join Chelsea in the group stage. The blues were knocked out of last season’s competition by eventual winners Barcelona, who beat Chelsea 4-0 in the final.
England’s other participants in the competition, Arsenal, will face Slavia Praha for a place in the group stage. As with the men’s competition, the two English teams could not face each other at this stage.
The first leg will be played in Spain on either 31/8 or 1/9, with the second leg at the Academy Stadium to be played on either 8/9 or 9/9, with dates to be confirmed by the club in due course.
