The Premier League champions are making progress in their efforts to persuade the 36-year-old Brazilian to sign a new contract, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the month as reported by The Mirror. Pep Guardiola has hinted several times that he wants the veteran Fernandinho to continue at Manchester City.
While Fernandinho’s wish is for a 2 year contract but Man City are only willing to provide a 12 month contract to the Veteran, in addition to that Pep wants him to play a role in the City Football Group after the Brazilian decides to hang up his boots. This comes from the territory that Fernandinho has always been an influential enforcer on and off the pitch and plays an integral role in welcoming new signings and in meetings.
Fernandinho took to his Twitter account in the aftermath of City’s Champions League final defeat to Chelsea to thank fans for their support over the last eight years, it was construed as an admission that his Etihad career was over, but club insiders insist that his message should not be construed as a goodbye.
City paid Shakhtar £34million for Fernandinho in 2013 after he had won six Ukrainian titles and the UEFA Cup.
He has since lifted four Premier League titles, the FA Cup and six League Cups in Manchester.
Other Transfer Rumors
City are targeting a new defensive midfielder this summer – and Guardiola is an admirer of West Ham’s Declan Rice according to a report from The Mirror.
West Ham manager David Moyes recently stated that it would take upwards of £100 million for the London club to sell their star midfielder, and taking into account Manchester City’s history when it comes to transfer fees, it is difficult to imagine a scenario where they would break their budget for a back-up option to Rodrigo (Report: City Xtra).
According to the latest reports from Jeremy Cross of the Star, Manchester City are now plotting a £30 million move for Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder, Yves Bissouma this summer.
Guardiola is a big fan of Bissouma and has carefully tracked the player since the start of the season and he feels ‘confident’ that he can bring in the Mali International to the Etihad.
But Man City will face a huge competition from Arsenal, Tottenham, Everton and West Ham who are also looking forward to secure Bissouma.
City are keen to sign a central midfielder in the close season amid doubts about Fernandinho’s immediate future.
Who do you think City will actually secure in the Transfer Window?
