This summer, one of the positions that Manchester City might sign a reinforcement in is at left back. Manchester City haven't signed a left back since we paid £50 million to Monaco for Benjamin Mendy in 2017, who has mostly been injured and inconsistent during his four years.
During that time we have used unnatural and makeshift left backs in Olexsandr Zinchenko - our first choice left back, but a midfielder by trade.
Joao Cancelo - a natural right back , Fabian Delph - a midfielder but default now at Everton and Nathan Ake - a natural centre half.
Therefore, most of the players we have used in Mendy's absences haven't been natural left backs apart from maybe Nathan Ake, who played left back when he was at Watford on loan when still contracted with Chelsea in the 2015-16 season.
However, Zinchenko in the four years has played well at left back and has grown to be our first choice left back and has improved drastically in terms of attacking and defensive duties at left back even though its not his natural position.
Benjamin Mendy is rumored to leave this summer because of his injuries and inconsistency. I think that his injuries has ruined him from being the Mendy we saw at Monaco, though he has shown promise when he first joined and in odd appearances over the four years.
Signing a consistent natural left back will mean we won't need to worry about that position for years to come.
Here are three left backs we should target this summer.
Nuno Mendes
Over the last months or weeks, we have been linked with this 18 year old Portuguese who led Sporting Lisbon to their first title since 2002. He is rumored to have a £60 million release clause though Lisbon could start negotiating at £34 million according to Correio da Manhã via Sport Witness. Rumors of a player swap are also on the table.
Guardiola can improve his game to the next level and he can give us many years as he is still young and will have Portuguese nationals and speakers in the squad thus helping him settle in to Manchester. Mendes is also in the Euros squad of Portugal and we might see how good he is during the Euros.

Robin Gosens
Like Mendes, we have been linked with the German player Gosens who is in Euros squad of Germany so we might see how well he plays during the Euros. He has been an Atalanta starting player ever since he joined them and helped them to a 3rd place finish in Serie A this season. Atalanta may accept a fee of £35 million ,according to Manchester Evening News which is cheaper in value than Mendes and better for Manchester City as they can use the transfer budget to get other important targets in other positions like a striker to replace the legendary Sergio Aguero.
Gosens is an excellent, attack minded left back which Guardiola likes and these skills can be improved even further. He has been involved in 36 goals in the last two Serie A seasons combined which is a great amount for a defender. If he does sign for us then he could be involved in a lot of goals and assists as we create out many chances.

Lucas Digne
Digne is another player I think Manchester City should target.
The French left back is in the Euros squad of France because of his brilliant displays for Everton in the Premier League in the last couple of seasons. He has been involved in 25 goals in all competitions since he arrived from Barcelona. He is one of the best Premier League left backs so settling in won't be an issue for him and has UCL experience from his Barca days.
Guardiola can improve him from being a brilliant left back into a world class left back that is one of the best in the world. He is valued at £31.5 million according to transfermarkt.
However, this is just an estimate and Everton will demand £50-60 million in my opinion.
