Manchester City’s first Champions League final ended in defeat as Chelsea edged out City to be European champions.

A goal from Kai Havertz just before the break was enough to give the London side a 1-0 in Porto.

A match filled with refeering erroes, sloppy play and maybe indefensible squad selection by Pep. The match had it all bare a City goal.

City lose and now have to dust off and prepare for another ardous season in August.

Good luck to all the players in the various summer tournaments.

On to the reaction-

Pep Guardiola Reaction

“If today we analyse the game of course we are sad. Congratulations to Chelsea, we have to learn from this, we will learn for the future.

“But the season was exceptional, I have incredible respect for the players, they did everything, they gave everything on the pitch.

“Unfortunately, today we couldn’t win, but we will come back in the future stronger.”

“It was a tight game and I think, being the first time in the Champions League (final), we played a really good final,” the City boss reflected.

“We showed courage, especially in the second half.

“It’s not easy to play this competition for all of us, it’s our first time (in the final) but we did everything.

“I just want to congratulate the players for an exceptional season and the game they played today.”

“I don’t know how the pain in his face is, we will see what happened,” Guardiola revealed when asked aboutDe Bruyne’s injury.

“I haven’t seen him yet or spoken to the doctor.

“Hopefully it won’t be a big problem.”

“I tried the best selection to win the game,”+

“It was a tight game, we had some almost chances, no clear ones. The defensive structure of Chelsea it’s not easy. They had the goal, Werner in the first half and Pulisic in the second, they didn’t have more.

“We struggled a little bit with long balls and second balls. In that moment you need the inspiration and quality, there were three or four moments that were close to score a goal, but they didn’t’ arrive.”

What a way to end the season. On a whimper.

Alas, we go again next season.
