Pep On Signing a Striker this Summer: “With the economy in world football now, we’re not going to sign a striker this season...”

What is Pep’s endgame here?

Pep Guardiola made some claims today that have caused waves all across the football landscape.

When asked about signing a striker this summer he responded-

“I want to be clear, there is maybe maybe we find a player to replace Sergio. In terms of number he might be replaced but what he means to this club it’s impossible.”

“We have enough players in the first team now and interesting players in the academy. With the economy in world football now, we’re not going to sign a striker this season...”

“Maybe there’s a chance we are not going to sign a striker...”

Wow. My initial thoughts are these are mind games as City have been linked with paying huge sums for players like Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland. This would, in theory, quell some claims of City spending 120m Euros plus for these players. City obviously don’t want to overspend and this seems a resetting of the market and lowering expectations. Which is smart, don’t pay anymore than you have to.

We’ll see what the offers are as we progress in to what should be an amazingly complicated summer window.
