Manchester City’s UEFA Women’s Champions League dream is over at the quarter-final stage despite an admirable 2-1 victory over Barcelona. A 4-2 aggregate loss.
We knew it would always be an uphill struggle for Gareth Taylor’s side as they looked to overturn a three-goal first leg deficit against a side yet to taste defeat this season. Thanks to Janine Beckie, though, hope started early, but ultimately faded.
Even with a fantastic performance by Ellie Roebuck, who stopped multiple Asisat Oshoala attempts, the Catalan side equalised before the hour.
Later, a Sam Mewis penalty vaulted City ahead once again with 20 minutes of the game to play. It proved a task too daunting. City did prove they could play with the elite and will now hope for a much stronger campaign next season.
The focus then, now shifts to the domestic FAWSL and wining that is well within reach.
