Manchester City Women continued their excellent run of form by beating Bristol City 3-0 at Twerton Park. First half goals from Caroline Weir and Ellen White was added to by American star Sam Mewis in the final minutes as the blues kept the pressure on leaders Chelsea.

Fresh from beating Fiorentina in the Champions League last week, City produced another fine display, full of attacking intent that fans have become accustomed to and that has taken them to within 2 points of Chelsea.

Going into the match, City had won all seven of their previous matches in all competitions, and all nine of their WSL games, which propelled them up the league to become title challengers once again. By comparison, Bristol City have won just two matches all season and remain rooted to the bottom of the table and in serious danger of relegation after last night’s defeat.

And the blues piled on the agony for their hosts, taking the lead with just 12 minutes on the clock, and as has happened on so many occasions this season, it was Chloe Kelly who made the goal. The winger raced away down the right and had plenty of time to pick out Weir and the Scot steered the ball home from 10 yards out.

White had a goal ruled out for offside soon after as City threatened to crush their lower table opponents, and had that been allowed, it may well have signalled another avalanche of goals for the blues.

Kelly was seeing plenty of the ball on the right hand side and another cross was met by White, but the England striker couldn’t divert her header on target. However, White made amends for that miss on 30 minutes and, for a change, it was Lauren Hemp who provided the chance. Collecting a ball over the top from Alex Greenwood, Hemp found white completely unmarked in the area, and this time, she wasn’t going to miss and City went 2-0 up.

The home side had a chance to reduce the deficit with a free kick outside the penalty area which Ellie Roebuck punched away. And the keeper was equal to a shot that came in from Jones on the edge of the area, but it was bread and butter to the young City keeper.

City had plenty of chances to wrap the game up in the second half, but were denied by some excellent saves by the home keeper, who prevented Mewis, White, Abby Dahlkemper and Janine Beckie, although the rebound from Beckie’s shot fell nicely for Mewis to send a powerful header over the keeper and into the net for 3-0.

Final Score: Bristol City Women 0-3 Manchester City Women
