Manchester City Women’s new signing Sam Mewis has expressed her delight at joining the club.

The USA international, who has earned 67 caps for the national side, joined the blues earlier this week from North Carolina Courage and told of how she feels lucky to have joined a club like Manchester City.

“I feel so lucky to have the opportunity. A couple of months ago my agent came to me with it and my eyes just kind of opened wide because obviously Manchester City is such a great club and is so well known.

“We [North Carolina Courage] played them last year in the ICC tournament and I just remember thinking how good they were and how every player was so comfortable on the ball.

“I thought it would be cool to play overseas one day and for a club like Manchester City. I feel really lucky and really fortunate to have this opportunity.”

Mewis is manager Gareth Taylor’s second signing of the summer after Chloe Kelly joined the blues from Everton in July as City build to mount another challenge at the WSL title.

City were top of the table when the season was suspended due to the Covid-19 outbreak and Chelsea were crowned champions on a points-per-game basis.

Mewis will get an opportunity to show what she can do when City face the champions in the season curtain-raiser at Wembley as they face Chelsea in the Women’s Community Shield, before travelling to Birmingham to take on Aston Villa on the opening weekend.
