Manchester City’s pursuit of a second consecutive FA Cup and a first Champions League has been further put on hold as a further suspension of football has been announced.
Due to the increasing threat of the Coronavirus, City will now not be in action until 30th April at the earliest, with further postponements a possibility. With Euro 2020 now postponed until 2021, it may now be possible for the league season to be completed in June.
However, the further suspension also raises questions regarding player contracts, particularly if the season is extended again. City will not be the only club to be denied the use of players such as David Silva. The Spaniard’s contract expires on 30th June, but should the season go beyond that date, no doubt questions will be asked about whether Silva would be able to play on an implied contract, or not be able to take any part at all.
No decision has been made on whether the remaining FA Cup or Champions League matches will be completed and will be dictated by the growth of the virus over the next few weeks.
