Sam Mewis has been voted 2020 US Soccer Female Player of the Year, becoming the 17th different player to win the award.
A great award for a deserving player.
Mewis joined City in the summer from North Carolina Courage having played a key role in the United States’ 2019 World Cup triumph.
From the award dscription-
She played in eight of the nine games for the US national team in 2020, starting six, and scoring four goals, all coming at the 2020 Concacaf Women’s Olympic Qualifying tournament where she scored back-to-back braces against Costa Rica and Mexico.
And her first four months at City have been excellent. In 17 matches across all competitions, she has scored six goals - three in the league, two in the FA Cup and one in Champions League.
The USA star says it’s a privilege to have been voted the best US player, and paid tribute to those who have helped her reach the top of the game. She told this to mancity.com
“It’s obviously a huge honour to be a part of the list of players that have won this award in the past,” said Mewis.
“It should go without saying that it’s the team that does the work on the field and I just have so much respect for the other nominees this year and all my teammates. I’ve just loved playing with them on the US Team, and with my teammates for the Courage and Man City.
“It’s still such an honour to even get called into a US camp, to get playing time and to be able to score goals for my country. All that continues to be surreal to me. I owe so much to so many people who have helped me on my journey and any individual award is a credit to them.”
In a crowded field of five, she won the award.
Congratulations to Sam, and best wishes for a fantastic season with City.
