Caroline Weir on FA Women’s Cup:”We want to retain it,”

Caroline Weir says Manchester City’s previous experience of an FA Women’s Cup final at Wembley is all the motivation she needs ahead of a semi-final match against Arsenal.

Weir holds strong that success is an extra incentive going into the huge last four tie with the Gunners. Manchester City are the current holders of the trophy, having beaten West Ham United in the 2019 final.

The 2019/20 competition was rescheduled for the initial part of the 2020/21 campaign due to COVID-19 and the midfielder also feels being in the hunt for a trophy so early on can positively impact City’s fortunes for the remainder of the season.

”We want to retain it,” she said.

”It feels like a long time ago, last year at Wembley. It was a really special day. It was definitely a highlight for us all. We want to be back there. We want to win it.

”It’s a huge trophy and to be in contention for a trophy so early on in the season is obviously a huge thing and it’s really given us a lot of confidence going forward into the next part of the season.”

City face Arsenal at the Academy Stadium on Thursday 1 October, with kick-off at 19:15 (UK). In the UK, the game will be shown live on BBC 2.
