Manchester City Women’s Midfielder Caroline Weir has signed a new two year contract that will keep her with the club until the 2021/22 campaign.

The Scotland international is a key part of City’s team and the attacking midfielder expressed her delight at signing the contract.

“I’m delighted to have signed a new contract. “I’ve had a really enjoyable first 18 months and I’m really pleased to have extended my stay here. It was definitely an easy decision. I would like to think I’ve improved a lot. It’s a great Club and it really tests you, taking you out of your comfort zone.

And Weir heaped praise on the club, justifying her decision to make the move to Manchester. “When I first joined, I was a bit younger and so excited to be at a Club like this. It’s been everything I hoped for.

“The Club are known to be so good as being equal, treating the women’s players as ultimate professionals. That’s huge for me as a player and it’s great to be part of. I love Manchester – I love the city – and from day one, I’ve felt at home here. It’s so welcoming and friendly and I’m very settled here.

“I’m looking forward to staying longer, and hopefully, we can continue to go out and compete for trophies.”

Weir becomes the second player to sign a new contract with City Women after captain Steph Houghton penned a new deal last week.

The midfielder became an instant hero after bagging the winner with a stunning striker to beat neighbours and rivals Manchester United on the opening day of the season at the Etihad Stadium, and has scored 15 goals in her 53 appearances for the blues.

And Gavin Makel, head of Women’s Football, praised the 24 year old Scot. “Since joining the Club, Caroline has proven in her performances that she is a top-class player and has the ability to develop even further. She is highly regarded within the Club and I am delighted that she will continue her journey with us here at Manchester City.”
