Pauline Bremer made it ten goals in five games as her hot form continued against Sheffield United in the Women’s League Cup. The German striker hit a hat-trick and Laura Coombs grabbed a goal as City crushed the Blades 4-0 to reach the semi-final.
The holders have won both their matches in 2020 and continued their fine form against their Championship opposition, but were made to wait unto the 38th minute before making the breakthrough. The blues were frustrated until that moment, with Caroline Weir going close in the first minute, before Blades keeper Becky Flaherty denied England striker Ellen White.
Georgia Stanway went close but it was the German striker who finally broke the deadlock. Taking a pass from Keira Walsh, Bremer drilled home to give City the lead. And right on the stroke of half-time, Bremer doubled the lead after being set up by Janine Beckie.
The blades must have been fearing a repeat of last season’s 6-0 thrashing by City as the blues continued to dominate. However, it took until the 73rd minute for the blues to put the game to bed, and the goal came courtesy of Coombs first goal for the club, curling home the third goal.
But the night belonged to Bremer, who scored her 18th goal of the season with her head to deservedly take home the match ball.
City will now face either Manchester United, Arsenal or Chelsea as the blues stormed into the last four.
Next up for City is a trip to Birmingham in the WSL, before the big top of the table clash as Arsenal visit Manchester.
Final Score: Sheffield United Women 0-4 Manchester City Women
