Two goals from Pauline Bremer and one from Gemma Bonner saw off Everton Women as City kept the pressure on Arsenal at the top of the Women’s Super League. The blues beat the Toffee’s 3-1, with the visitors goal being unwittingly supplied by City youngster Georgia Stanway, who put through her own goal.
Fresh from beating Tottenham 4-1 last weekend, the bleus picked up from where they left off, but would have found themselves a goal down except for the brilliance of Ellie Roebuck, who tipped Hannah Caine’s powerful drive onto the bar in the first minute.
That served as a warning for City and on 18 minutes, the bleus took the lead. Lauren Hemp thread a ball into the box for Caroline Weir, who squared to Bremer. The Germen striker turned an lifted the ball over the onrushing keeper to make it 1-0 to City.
Everton almost made it 2-0 to City but the keeper was on guard to deflect the ball over for a corner to the blues. But a few minutes later, the blues did go 2-0 up. Bremer collected the ball just inside the area, and with time and space, curled a right foot shot beyond the keeper.
Bremer could have had a hat-trick only for her spectacular overhead kick to beat the keeper and bounce off the top of the bar, but the blues did make it 3-0 on 64 minutes. A free kick on the City left found its way through to Bonner, who poked home from close range.
City went in search of more goals, but it was Stanway who kept the bleus from the top spot. A corner on the Everton right was deflected into her own goal, and with Arsenal’s four 4-0 win at Brighton, the Gunners stayed top on goals scored.
City’s next match is away to Sheffield United in the League Cup on Wednesday, before travelling to the Midlands next Sunday to face Birmingham City.
Final Score: Manchester City Women 3-1 Everton Women
