Manchester City have confirmed winger Leroy Sane is set to undergo surgery in the coming days after tearing his cruciate ligaments during Sunday’s Community Shield win over Liverpool.

Sane, who has been linked all summer with a move to Bayern Munich, hobbled off clutching his right knee after just 13 minutes at Wembley and is now likely to remain at the club until January at the earliest.

The blues issued a statement on the club website said: “He [Sane] has undergone testing throughout the week, with a specialist doctor travelling to Manchester for further examinations to understand the extent of the injury.

“Manchester City will provide Leroy with all the support and guidance he needs, and everyone connected with the club wishes him a quick and full recovery.”

It is not known at this stage how long Sane is expected to be out for.

It seems to be a start of the season curse for City, as a similar injury to Kevin de Bruyne ruled the midfielder out for more than 60 days, so if that’s anything to go be, we probably won’t see Sane back in a City shirt until October at the earliest.
