Deadline Day. During the Summer 2019 Transfer Window, Manchester City sought to strengthen their defences. The loss of club hero Vincent Kompany and make-shift defender Fabian Delph meant the Sky Blues needed reinforcements.
City’s first purchase was a familiar face as former youth player Angeliño returned to the club. The left back had a successful spell at Dutch club PSV Eindhoven, where they finished second in the 2018/19 season. With Benjamin Mendy’s constant injuries and Oleksandr Zinchenko as an unnatural defender, Angeliño will provide reinforcements in the left back position.
On the opposite end of the field, City sought to find a back-up for Kyle Walker as Danilo expressed an interest to leave the club. The Sky Blues would eventually select João Cancelo as their new right back, and Cancelo joined City after leaving Juventus. On the other end, Danilo would depart the club and join Juventus, thus completing a like for like swap.
Finally, but perhaps most important, Manchester City Manager Pep Guardiola found his central defencive midfielder. After missing out on Fred to Manchester United and Jorginho to Chelsea last season, City selected Rodrigo “Rodri” Cascante as Fernandinho’s eventual successor. The young midfielder played an instrumental role for Atlético de Madrid last season, and Rodri will look impressive his new manager as he joins the Sky Blues.
How will these three new acquisitions fare in Manchester?
