After being courted all summer, Manchester City have finally announce the signing of Joao Cancelo from Juventus.
The transfer had been subject to Brazilian full defender Danilo leaving the club, but the two clubs struck and agreement over the last few days for Danilo to be part of a swap deal. Cancelo underwent his medical at the Etihad today and the announcement was delayed until Danilo’s transfer had been completed in Turin.
Cancelo becomes City’s this major men’s signing of the summer after the capture of Rodri from Atletico Madrid and the return of left back Angelino. Speaking after completing his move to Manchester, Cancelo said “City are a fantastic club, with a brilliant manager and I am delighted to be here. Everything about them has impressed me, from the facilities, to their style of play.
“I am always looking to develop my game and win trophies and I believe I can do that here, so now I’m really looking forward to the new season and testing myself in the Premier League.” Cancelo has signed a six year contract with the blues, which will take him up to 2025. As well as providing competition for Kyle Walker, Cancelo can also play further forward as well as at left-back.
The announcement is sure to please the City fans, who earlier flooded City’s Twitter feed with demands to announce the defender after they announced City Women’s new striker Lee Geum-Min.
The signing of Cancelo will possibly be the last of the summer, although Bournemouth’s Nathan Ake and Real Madrid’s Isco have also been linked in recent days. Meanwhile, Leroy Sane looks like he will be staying at the club at least until the January transfer window. The winger was injured after 11 minutes of Sunday’s Community Shield win over Liverpool, which has raised doubts about a potential transfer to Bayern Munich.
