Manchester City picked up right where they left off in the Premier League title defense with a fantastic 5-0 victory at West Ham.
A Raheem Sterling hat-trick, plus a Gabriel Jesus strike and Sergio Aguero penalty, jump started the Champions’ 2019/20 campaign, as Pep Guardiola’s men extended our league winning streak to 15 by continuing our excellent record at the London Stadium.
City have a 100% record at the home of the Hammers, having won all four visits, scoring 22 and conceding just one, and the season opener proved another day to remember for our tenth successive opening weekend triumph.
On to the reaction:
Pep Guardiola
Pep Guardiola on VAR: “We lost it a little bit. You need to know if it is regular. After Tottenham you don’t know. Now we can confirm. It’s good mentally because you think 0-3 - game over. But it’s 0-2 and you have to control emotions.”
“Typical first game of the season away in the Premier League. First half was not good, we have to improve. We didn’t control second balls. It happened at Brighton. But we got three points, goals and a clean sheet.”
“Ederson made an incredible save. We know we have to improve. Second half was much better. From the beginning it was better, we were more calm but we have to improve.”
Raheem Sterling Reaction
“It feels good but the important thing today was starting well as a team and getting the win and the three points,” the England winger told CityTV. “That’s what we’ve done and it’s a great way to start the season.
“It’s always good to score goals but at the same time you want to get a run of clean sheets going as well and long may it continue.”
Asked if he is targeting the golden boot this season, the 24-year-old said: “It’s early days. It’s about enjoying it and keeping winning – that’s the most important thing!”
