After weeks of speculation, it looks like Manchester City will make their first signing of the summer as the club activate midfielder Rodri’s release clause.
The Spanish midfielder, who manager Pep Guardiola sees as a replacement for Brazilian star Fernandinho, has been high on City’s transfer wish list since the end of the season, but no movement has been made by the club until now.
But the La Liga side confirmed that the players lawyers, along with representatives from City, paid the £62.6m release clause today and the player has now terminated his employment with the Spanish side.
Speculation increased last week when Atletico signed Marcos Llorente, and the new signing was pictured holding the number 14 shirt, which Rodri wore at Atletico.
The Spanish international made 34 appearances for Atletico last season, as well as 6 for the national side.
