On 13 June, the Football Association announced the fixtures list for the 2019/20 English Premier League season. The new campaign will begin on 9 August, where Manchester City will look to defend their domestic treble.
Following the FA Community Shied fixture against Liverpool on 4 August, Manchester City will begin their EPL title defence away at West Ham United on 10 August. The Sky Blues will host their first home match of the 2019/20 season against Tottenham Hotspur on 17 August.
On paper, City’s first set of challenges will emerge over November and December. During this two month span, the Sky Blues will face a difficult test against Liverpool at Anfield and will host Chelsea a week later. After a set of fixtures against Newcastle United and Burnley, City will then host rivals Manchester United before traveling to the Emirates to face Arsenal. Moreover, the Sky Blues will play two UEFA Champions League Group Stage matches during this period, thus adding to their difficult schedule. City dropped points at this stage of the campaign last season, and they will need to avoid repeating these mistakes.
By mid-December, the Sky Blues will learn their UEFA Champions League fate by potentially progressing to the competition’s Round of 16. Alternatively, they could be dumped into the UEFA Europa League’s Round of 32, or worst case scenario, be eliminated from European competition altogether.
Moving forward, the end of February and all of March will also be challenging. Should City progress out of the UEFA Champions League Group Stage, the Sky Blues would compete in the competition’s Round of 16, which is scheduled during this period. As for domestic fixtures, City will host Arsenal on 29 February before traveling across town for the Manchester Derby on 7 March. City then take on Burnley at home before their away fixture against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
City’s final match against a top six opponent in the 2019/20 season will come against Liverpool on 4 April. Depending on transpires over the course of the season, this could be a title-deciding fixture. The Sky Blues will then conclude the 2019/20 EPL season with a home fixture against Norwich City on 17 May.
Manchester City will have their work cut out for them, but this side retained the EFL “Carabao” Cup and EPL titles in back to back seasons. They also added the Community Shield and FA Cup for good measure. Will it be third time’s a charm for the Sky Blues?
