Bernardo Silva emerged from the fringes of the team to play a starring role in the 2018/19 campaign to help Manchester City secure an unprecedented clean sweep of domestic top flight silverware. The Portuguese midfielder has subsequently been honoured for his exploits by being named City’s player of the season. Silva was voted by the club’s fans as the best player for the just concluded campaign as the announcement was made during the victory parade celebrations on Monday.
In response, the 24-year-old thanked the club faithful, promising on behalf of his teammates to do more next season particularly in Europe.
”Thank you very much everyone,” he stated. “The way you pushed us this season. You made it real for us. Without them [the fans], it wouldn’t be possible. Next season, we’ll come back, trying to give you more titles.
”A lot of hard work has been put in. We’re very tired! It’s been a long season, a fantastic season for us, but with four trophies for all squad and staff, it’s been amazing.
”Hopefully, we want to do better, try and go for European trophies as well - it’s what we’re missing. The supporters need to demand more from us. European trophies - we need that. Let’s go for it!” he concluded.
City stunned the football universe by winning the Community Shield, Carabao Cup, Premier League, and FA Cup this term. It’s a feat that has never been accomplished before in English football. But the team’s capitulation in the Champions League has been fingered by some as a blemish. Some, especially those sympathetic to the course of the red side of Manchester have suggested that the real treble is the one that includes the Champions League which has been achieved by Man United. Others, including Liverpool fans have referred to the Sky Blues as local champions.
That should take nothing away from City’s achievement as most of the criticism stems from envy. Yet, it is very important that the team sets it’s sight on dominating the continent in the coming seasons as that remains the frontier to be conquered. Pep Guardiola realises how important that is and has indicated he will not relent in the pursuit of European honours.
