As per reports, Bayern Munich have opened talks with Manchester City concerning the transfer of Leroy Sane. The reigning German champions have been in the market for players to reinforce the team after a sensational failure in the Champions League this season as the side was dumped out of the competition after losing 3-1 at home to Liverpool. The club is carrying out a massive rebuilding project as age has caught up with several key players some of whom are on their way out of the club.

Having already acquired French World Cup winning full backs Benjamin Pavard and Lucas Hernandez from Stuttgart and Atletico Madrid respectively, emphasis has been placed on bringing in wingers. Wingers Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery have built world famous careers at the Allianz Arena over the years winning several trophies along the way. But as already stated, age has caught up with them, and unfortunately for the club, the duo will bow out at the same time. That leaves a gaping hole in the team’s attack that needs to be filled.

A failure to plan for their replacement earlier on has left the German side desperately in need of a quick fix. That resulted in recent efforts to sign young Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi. But the English side will not let go of their prized possession. That has led the club to look elsewhere for other options. Manchester City’s Leroy sane fits the bill.

The German winger played a starring role for Man City last season helping the club to a first league title win of the Pep Guardiola era. He was so instrumental to the side he won the PFA Young Player of the Year award. Much was then expected of him heading into this season. But he found himself playing a limited role as the Catalan manager tweaked his side. Bernardo Silva rose to the fore as one of the key players this time around as Sane had to settle for a limited involvement. Although the German international made significant appearances in the course of the campaign, his omission from the starting lineup in most cases particularly in key games showed he was no longer a key member of the squad.

That may have also influenced his decision to put off renewing his contract with the club. Talks were held for a considerable part of the season on extending a contract which expires in the summer of 2021, but the former Schalke man has refused to put pen to paper on a new deal. That has led to speculations he may be considering a move away from the club due to his reduced role in the team. Some have also suggested that the player may not find Guardiola’s all-action style of play very suitable. His unwillingness to work his socks off in training may have led to the manager’s choice of relying on the hardworking Bernardo Silva as a more dependable member of the front three.

Yet, Sane’s importance to the team cannot be minimised. Despite starting just 21 league games in the just concluded season, the 23-year-old has been the most product German player in all of Europe’s top five leagues contributing to 28 goals in 39 appearances(14 goals, 14 assists). Little wonder then that Bayern can go the extra mile for his signature. For Sane, heading home could be quite appealing. And for a club with such a rich history and dominance in German football, he is assured of winning many trophies at the Allianz Arena.

And for City, there could be light at the end of the tunnel as well. Having proven that the winger is not indispensable, he can be sold for a hefty sum that can be used to reinforce the team. A deal for Portuguese forward Joao Felix, who has made the headlines this season with top performances for Benfica could be the right investment. The 19-year-old has contribute to 25 goals (17 goals, 8 assists) in 31 outings.

That said, both parties could still come to an agreement as Sane has not publicly stated his desire to leave, nor has the manager indicated he does not want him anymore. He colud well be the star of the show again at the Etihad Stadium in years to come.
