Preview:
Only three matches remain in the 2018/19 English Premier League season. Burnley will host Manchester City on Matchday 36 on Sunday.
After struggling for a large portion of this season, Burnley have done just enough to avoid relegation. They earned a series of important results over the past few weeks, and following their draw against Chelsea in midweek, it appears they have secured a place in next season’s EPL. Whilst the Clarets need one point from their final three matches to mathematically guarantee safety, Burnley know EPL football is within their grasp.
Meanwhile, Manchester City earned a hard fought victory against Manchester United in midweek. The result sees them at the top of the EPL table, one point ahead of rivals Liverpool. City cannot be complacent in this match. The Sky Blues know that if they win in Burnley then they will be one step closer toward retaining the EPL title.
Will there be any late drama in this exquisite title race?
Team News:
Burnley are without the injured Aaron Lennon, Peter Crouch, Philip Bardsley and Steven Defour.
Manchester City’s Claudio Bravo and Kevin De Bruyne are injured and will not travel.
Possible Lineups:
Burnley
Formation: 4-4-2
Heaton; Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Hendrick, Westwood, Cork, McNeil; Wood, Barnes
Manager: Sean Dyche
Manchester City
Formation: 4-3-3
Ederson; Danilo, Stones, Otamendi, Mendy; B. Silva, Gündoğan, D. Silva; Mahrez, Jesus, Sané
Manager: Pep Guardiola
Prediction:
Following their impressive draw against Chelsea, Burnely all but secured their safety in the EPL. The Clarets now sit on 40 points after 35 games and are nine points clear of the EPL’s final relegation place. Unless the Clarets lose a combined 18-0 in their final three matches, they will play EPL football next season. Therefore, it seems Burnley have ensured they are safe. Manager Sean Dyche fielded the same lineup over the past three EPL matches, and it is possible he may allow his players to rest now that they are essentially safe. They have worked hard and this has paid off.
Meanwhile, Manchester City recently earned crucial victories against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United. They are now within touching distance of retaining the EPL title, and they know their objective. Win their final three matches of the EPL season, and the Sky Blues will be crowned the champions of England. This is easier said than done, but this City side have shown they are able to perform when under pressure. With this in mind, they cannot be complacent and must treat each of their final three opponents with respect. Assuming anything otherwise could lead to an unexpected pitfall for the Sky Blues.
Burnely have been playing better football as of late, but this is the same team City dispatched earlier this season. The Clarets lost their two encounters against the Sky Blues this season, where both the EPL and the FA Cup fixtures ended 5-0, but it is predicted it will be a much closer match. The Clarets will be a stubborn side, but the Sky Blues will do just enough to win this match.
