Preview:
Originally scheduled for Matchday 27, Everton and Manchester City will play their 26 match of the 2018/19 English Premier League season on Wednesday. Due to City’s involvement in the EFL “Carabao” Cup Final later this month, this fixture was rescheduled.
Despite some poor results this season, the Blues still find themselves within title contention. West Ham United drew with Liverpool on Matchday 25, meaning the Blues are only three points behind the Scousers. Should City win on Wednesday, they will reclaim the top spot of the EPL table (albeit with a game ahead).
The Blues will face a difficult test in Liverpool, however, as they travel to Goodison Park. The Blues have traditionally struggled at Everton, and this will make for an interesting affair.
Yet the Toffees have struggled lately, having been eliminated from FA Cup contention by Championship side Millwall. Everton also lost three of their last five EPL matches.
Anything is possible in football, however, so will the Toffees deliver another blow to City’s title defence?
Team News:
Everton are without the injured Idrissa Gueye, Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka and Yerry Mina.
Manchester City’s Benjamin Mendy, Cladio Bravo and Vincent Mompany are injured and will not travel for this match.
Possible Lineups:
Everton
Formation: 4-2-3-1
Pickford; Coleman, Keane, Zouma, Kenny; Davies, Gomes; Walcott, Sigurðsson, Richarlison; Tosun
Manager: Marco Silva
Manchester City
Formation: 4-3-3
Ederson; Walker, Stones, Laporte, Delph; De Bruyne, Gündoğan, B. Silva; Sterling, Agüero, Sané
Manager: Pep Guardiola
Prediction:
Manchester City are in prime position to put the pressure back on Liverpool. A City victory on Wednesday would have them level on points with Liverpool, albeit the Blues would be ahead on goal differential and number of goals scored.
Everton will look to spoil the fun, however, as they look for the EPL’s final UEFA Europa League spot. Five points separate them and seventh place Wolverhampton, and a win against the champions would be an additional step toward their aspirations to compete in the Europa League.
Given the forms of these two teams, it is predicted this will be an open match. Everton have lost three from five but City’s form has been very inconsistent. Therefore, it is expected neither side will keep a clean sheet but City will edge ahead by full time.
