2019 is about to close and with it, the end of a magnificent decade for Manchester City. Four Premier League titles, four League Cups, two FA Cups and three community shields and the first and only team in England to claim the domestic treble. It has truly been an amazing ten years.

But the team is only as good as the players on the pitch and we have been blessed to have seen some of Europe’s best players grace the Etihad pitch. But who has been your player of the decade? Here are the candidates.

Sergio Aguero

The Argentine striker signed for City in 2011 and became an instant hit with blues fans. Two goals and an assist on his debut against Swansea continued throughout the season, culminating with ‘that’ goal on the final day of the season against Queens Park Rangers to win the league for City for the first time in 44 years. The striker has since gone on to become City’s all-time record goal scorer and is also one Premier League hat-trick from breaking Alan Shearer’s record.

Vincent Kompany

The legend was there right at the start of City’s revival and has been a rock in the heart of the blues defence before leaving to become player-manager at Anderlecht during the summer. A solid defender, but also contributed to City’s title victories, scoring the vital winner against United in 2012, and again at home to West Ham on the final day of the season, while producing an absolute stunner against Leicester last season to win the match 1-0.

David Silva

The Spanish international joined the blues in 2010 from Valencia and has been another vital member of the blues senior squad that has been so successful this decade. His first goal for the blues came against Blackpool at Bloomfield Road in a 3-2 win and the midfielder has never looked back. He was a key architect in United’s 6-1 hammering at Old Trafford, netting City’s fifth and providing a defence splitting pass to release Edin Dzeko for the sixth. Silva is now in his last year at City, but blues fans will never forget Merlin.

Yaya Toure

The big Ivorian powerhouse was a huge, commanding figure in the middle of the park during his time at City. Signed by Roberto Mancini in 2010, Toure joined his brother Kolo from Barcelona and immediately made a name for himself, but it was towards the end of the season that the midfielder became immersed in City folklore. His winning goals at Wembley against United in the semi-final and Stoke in the final secured City’s first trophy since 1976. The following season, his two goals at Newcastle put one hand on the Premier league trophy, and despite is sometimes sulky nature, Toure is regarded as one of the best midfielders at City in recent years.

Kevin De Bruyne

It cannot be understated how much this guy means to Manchester City. Arriving in a reported £54m deal from Wolfsburg, the former Chelsea man was considered a waste of money as he couldn’t cut it at Chelsea, so he wouldn’t be able to do it for City. But as usual, the pundits were wrong and the Belgian has been a vital piece of City’s midfield ever since. The midfielder is continually topping the assist charts, but it’s his overall performance that has opposing fans and pundits drooling with admiration.

Raheem Sterling

Sterling joined City in a controversial transfer from Liverpool in 2015 and has been booed by almost every ground City have visited. His City career didn’t get off to a great start, but under Pep Guardiola, the winger has flourished. Consistent performances on the pitch for both City and England, together with his stance against racism in the game off it has made the young winger one of City’s most valuable players to date.

Pablo Zabaleta

We can’t do a Player of the Decade without mentioning Zabba. The combative defender was also there at the beginning of City’s revival, joining in 2008 and worked with four different managers in that time. Despite being a defender, Zabaleta loved to get forward as much as possible and scored City’s first goal against QPR in May 2012 on their way (eventually) to the league title. The following season, Zabba scored a late winner at Stoke in the FA Cup and spent nine years in the blues defence, before joining West Ham last season.
