Manchester City ended 2019 in a winning manner as second half goals from Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne secured a good win over Sheffield United.
This match marked the 100th Premier League win of Pep Guardiola’s City reign.
The visitors had a first half effort disallowed by VAR and proved a nice challenge for the champions.
There was alsosome more controversy, this time about Aguero’s 52nd minute opener, with the Blades claiming referee Chris Kavanagh had interfered a player in the build-up, but De Bruyne’s late strike sealed the deal and ensured that we ended an unforgettable decade with a necessary three points.
A win, clean sheet and we move.
On to the reaction-
Pep Guardiola Reaction
“Today was an incredibly tough game,” he added.
“For the opponent, for the fact we played again after less than 48 hours against one of the most physical teams in the Premier League. Big compliments to my team, again.
“I understand why Sheffield United are in the position they are in the table and have lost one game away so far.
“In the first half we had problems but in the second we were much better.
“In these types of games, if the first goal was not offside, it would have been very difficult to beat them.”
“i said at many press conferences, it’s unrealistic to think about that (catching Liverpool).”
“A team that has the numbers like Liverpool - why think about that when you’re points behind.
”It’s just to prepare, play good and to be as close to top of league, prepare for cup competitions and prepare next season.
”Every game helps us to prepare for next season and hopefully we can do better.”
“It’s a big compliment for the Club, players and staff to achieve 100 victories,” he said.
“It’s an incredible achievement for this incredible organisation and big compliments to all the players and staff we had during this period.
“Prestigious clubs, Chelsea, Manchester United, Everton, Liverpool and Manchester City is there in front of them, with the incredible amount of games won in a short period.
“We have been consistent, especially in the Premier League. We are all delighted for this achievement.”
Sergio Aguero Reaction
“Today we had to win… I am so happy because we needed the three points,” he reflected after the win under the Etihad lights.
“Now Liverpool is too hard. We have to focus just on winning because we need to play Champions League next season.”
“We have to play the same way and see what happens.”
“I am so happy but I play with good players, David Silva, Yaya Toure and now Kevin (De Bruyne).
“For me it’s so easy because I just have to focus on the goals.”
