Manchester City once again welcome Shakhtar Donetsk to Manchester as they look to qualify to the knockout stage of the competition. A draw will be enough to secure passage to the last 16, however a victory will guarantee the blues top spot and seeding for the knockout stage.

The blues drew 1-1 last time round at Atalanta after Raheem Sterling’s goal was cancelled out early in the second half before Claudio Bravo, a second half replacement for Ederson, was sent off for a professional foul.

City beat Shakhtar 6-0 in this fixture last season, thanks to a hat-trick by Gabriel Jesus, but the game will be remembered for the penalty that shouldn’t have been as Raheem Sterling was adjudged to have been brought down in the penalty area when he’d actually stubbed his foot into the ground.

Shakhtar need to win to keep their hops of qualification alive. They are currently level on points with Dinamo Zagreb in group C, but both have to play the blues before the end of the group stages.

Team News:

Sergio Aguero has been ruled out of the match with a thigh injury, and manager Pep Guardiola has said he will be out for a few weeks and is set to be replaced by Gabriel Jesus. Claudio Bravo is suspended following his red card at Atalanta, however Phil Foden will return form suspension.

Despite their injury worries, I don’t think Shakhtar will prove too much of a problem for City. They are a tough opposition, but City will have too much for them.
