Preview

Manchester City take on Southampton for the second time this week as they continue to chase Liverpool at the top of the Premier League. Victory for the blues will see City close the gap against their Mersey rivals, but only if Liverpool fail to win at Aston Villa.

City beat the Saints 3-1 on Tuesday evening without barely breaking a sweat, and also lined up with a midfield that contained youngster Phil Foden and Tommy Doyle. Meanwhile, Southampton are still smarting form their 9-0 home hammering to Leicester and a second trip to the Etihad, where City will be expected to recall some of their big names, will be the last thing they wanted.

Team News

City have no fresh injury worries ahead of the Premier League clash, with defender Angelino, who left the field clutching his thigh on Tuesday, only suffering from cramp and will be fit for selection. Raheem Sterling, John Stones and Kevin de Bruyne could all start for the blues, and City manager Pep Guardiola will have to choose whether to play both Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus for the first time in the Premier League this season, or to revert back to playing on striker. Fernandinho will be available again after missing the midweek match due to suspension following his red card against Villa last weekend.

Southampton will again be without the suspended Ryan Bertrand, but have received an injury boost with the news that Nathan Redmond and Sofiane Boufal are available for selection. Cedric and Moussa Djenepo are likely to miss out again through injury.

Prediction

Many people will be expecting the blues to walk this one and on paper, they should. However Southampton will have a point to prove and will try to keep City at bay. I don’t see them succeeding but I also don’t anticipate a goal-fest.

City 3-0 Southampton
