Manchester City Women defender Aoife Mannion is set for an extended period on the sidelines after the club confirmed she will undergo knee surgery.

The 24 year old, who joined the blues from Birmingham in the summer, suffered knee ligament damage in City’s 1-1 Champions League draw with Atletico Madrid on Wednesday and was replaced by Megan Campbell for Sunday’s derby in the Intercontinental Cup.

Mannion was called up to the England squad in August, and has been in impressive form this season, helping the club to a 100% league record and keeping four clean sheets in the process.

We wish Aoife a full and speedy recovery.
