Preview:
After a series of entertaining FA Cup matches over the weekend, the English Premier League is back underway. Newcastle United will host Manchester City on EPL Matchday 24.
Newcastle are once again struggling to stay afloat in England’s top division. The Magpies have only won five of their 23 EPL matches this season and currently hold a goal differential of negative 12. Should the North English club look to remain in the EPL next season, they will need to start earning results. Otherwise, they will be relegated to the English Championship.
Meanwhile, Manchester City will look to continue their remarkable run. Over the past six matches in all competitions, City have outscored their opponents by 28-0. Should they hope to overtake current league leaders Liverpool, City will need to add to this goalscoring tally.
Team News:
Newcastle United will be without several players for this match. Jonjo Shelvey, Karl Darlow, Mohamed Diame, Paul Dummett and Sung-Yueng Ki are all sidelined due to injury. Meanwhile, Yoshinori Muto was recalled to the Japanese national team to compete in the 2019 AFC Asia Cup.
As for Manchester City, Claudio Bravo remains as the long term absentee. Injury prone Vincent Kompany and Benjamin Mendy will also not feature in this match.
Possible Lineups:
Manchester City
Formation: 4-3-3
Ederson; Walker, Stones, Laporte, Delph; De Bruyne, Fernandinho, D. Silva; Sterling, Agüero, Sané
Manager: Pep Guardiola
Newcastle United
Formation: 5-4-1
Dúbravka; Ydelin, Lejeune, Lascelles, Clark, Ritchie; Pérez, Hayden, Longstaff, Atsu; Rondón
Manager: Rafa Benítez
Prediction:
Newcastle United were recently dumped out of the FA Cup competition and will not feature in the EFL “Carabao” Cup Final. Having been eliminated from England’s two cup competitions, the Magpies can now fully direct their attention toward EPL survival. Their next opponent, however, will make things difficult for them.
Manchester City are heavy favourites in this match. With nearly a fully fit squad, City will look to chase down Liverpool for the EPL’s top spot. In order to do this, they will need to win on Tuesday.
Given the current state and form of both sides, it is predicted this will be a routine win for the Blues on Tuesday.
