Manchester City scored goals galore in two games in four days have produced 16! After Rotherham’s 7-0 spanking in the FA Cup on Sunday, Burton Albion must have feared the worst. The worst came.
Pep Guardiola’s relentless squad have one foot in the Carabao Cup final after a remarkable 9-0 semi-final first-leg win. Gabriel Jesus scored four, with Kevin De Bruyne, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Phil Foden, Kyle Walker and Riyad Mahrez adding to Burton’s demolition.
City, surely, will contest the final at Wembley at the end of February after recording the largest ever margin of victory in the semi-finals of an English cup competition and our biggest win since 1987.
On to the reaction:
Pep Guardiola Reaction
“I want to give big congratulations to Burton for what they have done, they have beaten teams from the Premier League and Championship and deserved to be here,” said Guardiola.
“The difference in Premier League teams is the rhythm, when you have high intensity. The physicality is higher and we scored quickly.
“It was important to try take advantage, we didn’t expect to score as many but it’s great. It means a lot for us.
“We spoke about that (being ruthless) at half-time - to be simple. To score is best way to respect the competition and the opponents.”
“Incredible. His father has showed him some tricks! You know better than me what he means, he respects football and is charismatic. It’s an honour to play against his team.
“I wanted to congratulate them for getting to this stage in the competition. They deserve incredible credit.
“We don’t have a lot of titles in our museum so every time we have the chance to try and be in a final we have to take it and be hungry.
“Only way to do that is to take it seriously.”
As for the achievement of Jesus, Pep added: “Strikers needs goals, he had chances last game and today he scored. It will be good for him, the team, for everybody!”
Zinchenko Reaction
“Was my goal a cross!? A little respect please!,” he teased.
“It’s the first time I’ve played in a win like this.To be fair we scored a lot of goals, we wanted more, and our fans did too.
”At half-time Pep said keep going in the same way, the same spirit and to see if we can score more.”
Gabriel Jesus also offered a major contribution thanksa to his four-goal haul and he admitted that it was the first time that he had achieved the feat in his career.
The Brazilian also echoed Zinchenko’s praise towards the team’s mentality during the game.
“I have never scored four before in my career, I am so happy for this,” he said.
“Players like me want to play more, to help the team, and we went out there to win.”
