A tough game this week for Manchester City. A draw, 1-1, where the team looked part sloppy and part unlucky. A draw seemed fair in the end.
For City, it was Aymeric Laporte with a bullet header and the Wolves goal came at the end of some bit of controversy with a possible handball that VAR might have spotted or not.
Look, there’s controversy seemingly every game, I’m not going to crush the refs for this one. All in all, a decent day.
On to the reaction, courtesy of the official Manchester City website.
Pep Guardiola Reaction:
“It was a good game for the spectators, but we conceded too many counter-attacks and missed simple passes.
“We created a lot of chances against a team who had ten men behind the ball which is a positive.
“We played a 5-4-1 and we didn’t create that many opportunities with that system last season, but today we did.
“It was a good point, but we hit the woodwork three times and their keeper made some very good saves as well. Sometimes they go in, sometimes they don’t.”
“We played the same level in the first four games this season as we did last season – it is hard to play against good teams who defend in numbers and counter-attack well, so, as I said, I was surprised how many opportunities we did create.
“We tried, created chances but sometimes the final ball wasn’t good, but we will improve because defensively we weren’t as solid as we normally are.
“We knew how good Wolves were last season and that they are strong with the players they have so we knew this would be a hard game already.
“Every game we play, we learn more and today is no different.”
Kyle Walker Post game Comments:
“We created a lot of chances to put more than one past them, but they are a well organised team and it’s going to be very difficult for teams to come here.
”With five at the back it’s always going to be difficult to break people down. They’ve got people in key areas where we want to get... but Raz has hit the crossbar, Sergio’s hit the post and then the crossbar at the end so we’ve had enough chances. We need to be a little bit more ruthless and also as defenders we need to take responsibility on the second phase of free-kicks.”
On the Wolves goal Walker reflected: “I’ve heard that (it went in off the hand) but it’s hard for the referees to see everything, it was a goal that was given and we just had to get the equaliser which we did and we could have nicked it at the end.
”We know it’s going to be tough. Obviously what we achieved last year was incredible, 100 points and winning the Premier League was a fantastic achievement but we’re not settling on that.
”We need to go again, the players expect and the manager demands so much of us and we need to dust ourselves down. We’ve got a week’s preparation before the next game and hopefully we can get the three points at home.”
