What a great opening day for Manchester City! The Blues absolutely handled Arsenal in the first game of the new Premier League season. Winning 2-0 away at the Emirates and did so in conclusive fashion. Thanks to goals by Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva!
Pep Guardiola and the players were obviously very happy after the game, and here’s a full recap of their post-match reaction, Courtesy of ManCity.com:
On the performance
”We have to improve some movements but in general, in the moment we are, the desire to run, away at Arsenal - nobody can deny it’s complicated,” Pep explained in his post-match press conference.
“I think going away to the Emirates is always so complicated. Especially in the first game when Arsenal have a new manager. Every supporter wants to do their best and of course, winning the Community Shield this week was so good.
“We played a high level considering the lack of physical condition for many of the players who arrived back late after the World Cup.
“Our performance was good but this is just the first step so we keep going.”
”We saw him do well in the training session. He did it well, except the last 20 minutes when he was really tired. We trained one or two weeks, a short time. But the spirit is there and that is the most important thing.
”He made some good moves in the World Cup, the way he created spaces for others.”
“I said many times, our average level is high, you cannot deny that. I have a feeling we can improve. Like inserting Mendy into the group,” Guardiola reflected after the match.
“Today our pressing was different than Chelsea. To understand that needs time. But in general, I am more than satisfied what I saw against Chelsea and Arsenal.
“Mendy is Mendy. Sometimes we want to kill him and sometimes you think wow what a player we have.
“He gives us energy. “Mendy has a lot of things to improve and hopefully we can convince him to forget a little bit the social media and improve a few things.”
