According to Sam Lee of Goal, the Blues are eager to loan out the 18-year-old wonder kid for experience this coming season, but he prefers to remain at the Etihad Stadium and break into the first team.
With Diaz entering the last year of his contract, this situation has risen with a possible Jadon Sancho-like issue for City, which saw the promising winger exit for Borussia Dortmund last year when he had similar disagreements with the club’s vision for him.
Add other woes like the current contract struggle to re-sign Joel Latibeaudiere who captained England’s U-17 to a World Cup title and you now have a series of bad decisions at the academy.
That’s not to say it’s all City’s fault, but the club sure does not make it easy to break in to the first team. Nor should they, City’s ultimate goal is that elusive Champions League trophy and for that the best must play, no matter what. Still, there is a compromise as competition produces greatness and Pep would be wise to encourage it.
This is why another year for Diaz on loan getting consistent playing time like he would with a club such as Girona FC in Spain’s La Liga would be great for him. However, he is determined to make it at City and failing that, would prefer a permanent move than a loan move.
Which is completely understandable from Diaz’ part as well. The club and Diaz and his people should get together soon and find a solution because winding this out longer than it needs to be is not good for either party.
