Manchester City starlet Leroy Sane was officially left off Germany’s World Cup Squad this morning. In what come as a surprise to many, Sane’s exclusion can be explained away to personal preferences from Low himself.
It’s no secret how well he played at City as a winger spread out wide and Low is a manager who favors playing up the middle with players like Thomas Mueller and Mezut Ozil. Another factor to consider, his lack of time with the German National team, tallying only 12 official caps and only starting in half of those.
Then, there was concern from some in the German Media, echoed here in a Goal article, about his lack of commitment mostly seen in his decision to get a nose surgery done before the most recent Confederations Cup, which was not deemed entirely necessary by the coaching staff.
There are also suggestions from those close to the camp that he comes across as arrogant in training, in the same article it says, “although that is hardly new information for Low and his coaches - Sane has had that cocky air about him throughout his fledgling career.” Telling words about the player, especially for a German squad that focuses on machine like seriousness and technical prowess which goes against Sane’s delightful flair and arrogance.
Under Guardiola that is seen as great and even encouraged, but maybe under Low it’s the opposite.
What is true is that Sane still has a bright future with both City and the German team. This setback should motivate Sane and keep him honest in his work to continue to get better.
