Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has been ruled out of Wednesday’s Champions League match against Liverpool at Anfield.

The Argentine has missed the last five games for club and country because of a knee injury, and manager Pep Guardiola has stated the striker will miss out again as the blues chase a semi-final spot. “Sergio is much better but doctors spoke to him today. He said he still has a little bit of a problem and isn’t comfortable,” said Guardiola.

The news will come as a blow to the blues, but Aguero is the only injury concern for the club. However, City will be buoyed by the news that Liverpool face defensive problems, with Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan all missing, and midfielder Emre can doubtful, with Matip facing the rest of the season on the sidelines.

City will be seeking their second win on Merseyside in four days, following their 3-1 win at Everton to put them within one win of securing the title. Victory at Anfield would be City’s first on the red half of Merseyside for fifteen years, and would be a significant step as they aim to secure three trophies this season, barring an incredible collapse of their league form.

Elsewhere in the Champions League, Juventus, who knocked Spurs out in the last round, host Real Madrid while United’s conquerors Sevilla play host to Guardiola’s former side Bayern Munich.
