Manchester City are closing in on the Premier League title for the third time in seven years. Not only that, City are running away with it, holding a steady 16-point lead over rivals Manchester United. The entire league has thrown everything they can at City, but it just hasn’t been enough as the Blues have overcome every obstacle in their way in search of Pep Guardiola’s first major title in England.

At this point, it is safe to say that it’s almost inevitable (although not guaranteed) that City will win the title this year. Its just a matter of when, not if. It is now almost mathematically impossible for City to lose the title. I have put together some scenarios which will show us exactly when is the earliest possible date that City can clinch the title.

When Is The Earliest Date They Can Clinch? With United beating Liverpool a few weeks ago, City cannot clinch any earlier than April 7th. There was some speculation that we could clinch it by late March, but that probably wasn’t realistic. They however can clinch the title against their rivals Manchester United at the Eithad on April 7th.

What Will They Need To Do To Clinch Against United? City need nine points to clinch the title. However, as one of their next two fixtures is against United, City can clinch if they win their next two games. City’s next two matches are against Everton and United. If City win both of those games, they will have a 19-point lead over United with only 18 points left to play, guaranteeing the title. United play Swansea City when we are playing Everton, so this is all assuming that United win against the Swans as well. If United fail to beat Swansea, City can then clinch the title with a draw against United, as well as Tottenham dropping points against Chelsea on the same weekend.

Will United Give City A Guard Of Honor If We Clinch? Unfortunately, since we cannot clinch before April 7th, our rivals will not be the team to give us a guard of honor. That will go to our next opponent. Just a good dream, Blues... just a good dream.

If We Fail To Beat United, When Can We Clinch? If United beat City at the Etihad, City will then have to wait till April 22nd to clinch the title. That game will be Swansea City at home. It could be postponed even further if City fail to get a result against Tottenham, which follows the United fixture. If City were to lose to United and Spurs, they cannot clinch till they play West Ham United following the Swansea fixture.

Patrick’s Prediction: City will not clinch against United. I may be a pessimist, but for me, it’s very hard to see that happening. Mourinho, as annoying as he is, is also a good manager who finds ways to get results, and he will not want to lose the title to Pep at the Etihad. United will do whatever it takes to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Here’s how I see it playing out: City will beat Everton, United will beat Swansea , United and City draw 0-0 thanks to Mourinho parking the bus, City beat Spurs without Harry Kane and clinch at home against Swansea.

What do you think, Blues? When will City clinch the title? Will it be against United? Will it be against Swansea? Or will they give us all a heart attack and make the title race even more interesting by clinching at a later date, like against West Ham?
