Man City continue their pursuit of some much needed midfield depth. City are a well oiled machine with players at every position. But if there was one position City could use some depth at, its in the midfield. Failing to secure Jorginho and Fred earlier in the year, and with Weigl and Neves looking unlikely to leave their respective clubs in the winter, City have turned their interest in another direction.
Man City are very interested in the services of Ajax starlet Frenkie de Jong. According the latest reports, City are readying a bid for the winter. De Jong is considered one of the brightest and most highly rated prospects in Europe. According to The Sun, City and Ajax are in high level talks for De Jong, with a bid expected around £70-£80 million. In these same reports, there is speculation that Ajax want a player involved in the deal. And the player that was mentioned was Ilkay Gundogan. Barcelona and PSG are also hot on De Jong’s radar.
Another player that City are highly interested in is Ajax Center back Matthijs de Light. City have been linked with De Light since the summer, and he is pegged as a long term replacement for Vincent Kompany, who is out of contract at the seasons end. De Light is one of Europe’s top young defenders, and has been called the next Virgil Van Dijk. According to reports, Barcelona and City are the two teams that are front runners for De Light’s services. De Light is currently being heavily pursued, with Juventus, PSG, Man United, Arsenal, Spurs, City and Barcelona all interested in his signing. The latest reports suggest that De Light is not interested in leaving in the winter, and has downplayed the heavy speculation of his future. However, a move can still happen given that a bidding war is likely going to ensue for his services. But it is likely he will leave in the summer, and expect several teams to make him one of their top targets, if not their top target.
