The biggest signing of the summer transfer window for Manchester City is now a reality: Benjamin Mendy has joined the Sky Blues from AS Monaco on a five-year deal.

The new signing spoke to City’s website about joining the club:

“I am absolutely delighted to be joining Manchester City. “They are one of Europe’s leading Clubs and in Pep Guardiola they have a manager committed to playing attacking football. I am sure that over the next few years we will be successful.”

Mendy was City’s top priority of the window and it took five different offers to convince Monaco to sell him. If the reported figure of £52.5 million is indeed correct, Mendy is the most expensive defender in history, surpassing Kyle Walker and John Stones who have also cost City a lot of money to sign.

The 23-year-old left-back exploded onto the scene at Monaco last season and is one of Europe’s top full-backs, with fantastic defensive skills and an ability to support the attack and provide some great crosses.

Mendy will join training with his teammates on Monday and is available to make his City debut against Real Madrid on Wednesday night in Los Angeles.

Welcome, Mendy!
