How I became a fan of Manchester City

A story of a single goal that changed my life.

Welcome to the refreshed Bitter and Blue! To celebrate the new look and feel of our sports communities, we’re sharing stories of how and why we became fans of our favorite teams. If you’d like to share your story, head over to the FanPosts to write your own post. The best will be featured on our new front page!

I used to be a poor Brazilian person who lived in a poor house and didn't have cable TV or internet until 2012.

The year of 93 minutes, 20 seconds.

93 minutes, 20 seconds. A historic goal is scored by an Argentine striker already considered one of the best goalscorers in the world. A stadium erupts. A great Italian coach celebrates with his bench and the crowd, a crowd that invades the pitch as soon as the final whistle goes.

I didn't know Manchester City wasn't really a big club.

I didn't know Manchester City was taken over a bunch of times by richer and richer men who began to pour insane amounts of oil money into a football club in England until it became good enough to challenge for titles.

The only thing I knew is that I was in love with Manchester City after 93 minutes, 20 seconds. That was when Sergio Agüero scored the game-winning goal against Queens Park Rangers that broke the hearts of Manchester United fans and made City champions of England for the first time since... well, it felt like forever.

At that very moment, five years ago, I became a Citizen. Actually, I became a citYzen. Because it's happyness, not happiness, that I felt when that goal was scored. I grew up as a Barcelona supporter who was used to winning titles all the time, but when Agüero scored, I celebrated a title like never before.

It was a different feeling. It was a strange feeling. It wasn't really happiness. It was relief. And it wasn't supposed to feel like relief because I wasn't a longtime fan who suffered for decades. I became a fan AFTER that goal, not before. But I felt like a decade-long fan, and somehow the feeling of relief coming from the Etihad Stadium came over me, and I was sold. Yeah, this was the English team I wanted to support.

It has been better since then. Relief has turned into somewhat of a habit, and we've celebrated quite a few titles since 93:20. But the best part about being a Manchester City fan is that I am a Manchester City fan for a living. I write about the club I've loved for six years. I write about an era that started with relief and could become an era of success thanks to the world's best manager.

It's an exciting time to be a Manchester City fan. You might think I'm not a REAL fan because I've only been part of the good times, but you have to understand I used to be a poor Brazilian person who lived in a poor house and didn't have cable TV until 2012.
