Former Manchester City defender and Premier League title winner Martin Demichelis has finally announced his retirement from the beautiful game at the age of thirty-six.
The Argentine signed for City in 2013, helping them to lift the Premier League trophy at the end of his debut season. Although his decline was visible in the following seasons, the veteran remained useful up until the end of last season, when he was released from the club.
Making 104 appearances and lifting the League Cup twice on top of the Premier League, Martin should be seen as a rather successful signing. He had his criticisms and weaknesses, but overall, Demichelis did his job and was seen by many as the best defender within the City ranks throughout the 2014/15 season.
During his press conference earlier this week, Demichelis admitted that his legs are starting give way.
“I want to be honest,” said the defender. “I lost the strength in my legs and my concentration. But I want to give thanks to football.”
It is sad to see him go, but all good things must come to an end.
Best of luck, Demi!
