According to Croatian newspaper Jutarnji list, Manchester City are close to striking a deal for Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitić in this January transfer window. Rumors arose after Ivan was left unused in his club’s last couple La Liga matches and was not named in the squad that played out a 1-1 draw against Villarreal.
Now the Croatian paper is claiming that the 28-year-old is in reaching distance of a move to the Etihad this month. City manager Pep Guardiola and director of football Txiki Begiristain are said to believe that with Ilkay Gundogan injured long-term and Yaya Touré’s contract winding down, Rakitić would be a perfect fit.
The midfielder’s agent has told Mundo Deportivo that there is no authenticity to the rumors, which is no surprise. Guardiola has already declared the defense as his priority for improvement. With players like Fernandinho and David Silva, it is arguable that the Sky Blues midfield is their strongest area, requiring the least improvement.
But hey, Silly Season!
