Clubs such as Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Everton have all been linked to the rising Dutch star, but it looks like it will be impossible to obtain his signature until the end of the season.
“Virgil is not for sale,” said the club’s executive director Les Reed in an interview with the Southampton Daily Echo.
“We haven’t had any bids and if we got any bids we wouldn’t consider them because it just doesn’t make sense to think we would release Virgil Van Dijk in midseason when we have still got, we believe, all to play for.
“There haven’t been any enquiries but certainly the status of him at the moment is that he is not for sale.”
If Pep Guardiola wants a central defender this month, he will have to look elsewhere. With Holger Badstuber being played down and Van Dijk ruled out, options are running low. City may have to stick it out with what they have until the end of the season.
