Manchester City’s chances of signing Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic have been reportedly bolstered as the Blaugrana will attempt to raise funds to and give superstar Lionel Messi a new contract. This could mean the end of Rakitic’s time at the Camp Nou, and City are looking to pounce on this opportunity.
This transfer (and therefore the rumor) would be very questionable as Pep Guardiola’s side does not necessarily need improvement in the midfield. Even if it was required, City should pursue younger talent that will be more reliable in the years to come. Rakitic is 28 years old and also struggling for form, and both factors should dispel Pep’s interest in the midfielder.
The probable exit of Yaya Touré in the summer could prompt the signing of a central midfielder, but even then there are better options than Barça's blonde. The name of Borussia Dortmund youngster Julian Weigl has been thrown around in the media and the German would be a far more favorable target for Guardiola’s team of the future than Rakitic.
If a midfield pickup is absolutely crucial, City’s supporters surely hope it is worth the money that could be used more responsibly for defensive rejuvenation.
