One small thing that got lost amid all the madness of the Manchester Derby was the inclusion of Academy midfielder Aleix García in the match squad. The youngster stayed on the bench for the whole game, but his presence was not a coincidence.
Aleix García is one of five Academy products that have already been promoted to the Manchester City first team by manager Pep Guardiola, according to reports in England. Along with García, defenders Tosin Adarabioyo, Pablo Maffeo, Angeliño Tasende and goalkeeper Angus Gunn have all earned a spot in the senior squad and will be available for selection starting on Tuesday's Champions League match at Etihad Stadium against Borussia Monchengladbach.
All five youngsters impressed Guardiola during preseason. Adarabioyo, Maffeo and Angeliño all played in the Champions League playoff second leg against Steaua Bucharest three weeks ago, and their performances have caught the eye of the manager. Gunn has also impressed Pep with his distribution skills as a goalkeeper, and García is a great passing midfielder, someone Guardiola wants to develop into a perfect player for his system.
Guardiola promised to use the Academy product when he arrived at City, and he was not lying. Congrats, kids!
