With half of the Premier League season still left to play, one wouldn’t think the New Year's Eve game versus Liverpool could possibly rule Manchester City out of the title race. If you’re one of these people, you’re sorely mistaken.
While City regains Sergio Agüero for the match at Anfield after serving his four-game suspension, City’s match against Liverpool might be one of their toughest yet. Jurgen Klopp’s newly invigorated squad is one point ahead of City, and the two are six and seven points behind league leaders Chelsea, respectively.
Liverpool are not full force, however, as Joel Matip will miss the fixture against City due to an ankle injury, while Philippe Coutinho is still out. However, players like Adam Lallana, Sadio Mané and Dejan Lovren have stepped up in their fellow teammates’ absences.
If City are hopeful to compete with Chelsea for the title, then this game is a must-win fixture. In case of a loss, City will drop four points behind Liverpool and ten behind Chelsea, if they win at home against Stoke. A seven-point gap is hard enough to bounce back from, let alone a 10-point gap.
Although there’s half of the season left to play, the chance to win a 3rd Premier League title could completely vanish with a loss against Liverpool.
