After the news of Vincent Kompany’s latest injury, it has been reported that Manchester City are ready to splash the cash on yet another central defender.
The name being thrown around is Southampton rising star Virgil Van Dijk. His current club allegedly values him at £30 million, which would be not be problematic for City given their financial state.
The Dutchman defended flawlessly against the Sky Blues in October, which was substantial in the Saints’ retention of a point at the Etihad. Van Dijk is a great defender who reminds us of a young Kompany, and he might just be the next Kompany if signed.
Pep Guardiola appears to be losing faith in Kompany as the Belgian has been exceedingly ill-fated injury wise. If Van Dijk is lured to the Sky Blue side of Manchester this January or in the upcoming summer, it would surely mark the unfortunate end of Vincent’s time at the club.
City face competition from cross-town rivals Manchester United and Liverpool for Virgil’s signature, however, Guardiola’s side would probably be the defender’s preferred option. The chances of this transfer going through are likely as Southampton would struggle to retain the player’s services as they do with all of their stars, season after season.
