Despite losing 1-0 in the League Cup Derby, Manchester City had positives to take from Wednesday's match. The biggest positive was the eye-catching performance of young right-back Pablo Maffeo. He has been the center of much attention for a while now, but his display has proven his capabilities even further.
Pablo kept Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford from having a substantial impact on the match. He did a superb job marking the young Englishman, and impressed fans not only on the blue side, but red as well. So what’s next for Maffeo?
Many fans are pondering if he is prepared to play a number one full-back role, but realistically, the answer is not quite. Maffeo should start by replacing his namesake Pablo Zabaleta as an understudy to Bacary Sagna. Learning from the French veteran would have a significant effect on his growth.
Pablo Maffeo undoubtedly shined brightest on the blue side, but one match will not determine his role just yet. With some patience and growth, he will become a world class defender for Manchester City.
